: : A friend is in possession of a dinner service for eight, serving platter, etc., with a lithopane of a geisha on the bottom of the tea/coffee cups. The marking is in English only and reads:
: : Kutani (moutain sketch behind the name)
: : Hand-Painted (in a banner of a sort)
: : Orched
:
: : "Orched" is not a misspelling of "orchid" as there isn't a single orchid to be seen. The colors are pink, green and blue, with gold highlights. The scenes depicted appear to be of a sea inlet and a bridge with Mt. Fuji, presumably, in the distant background.
: : I gather that these pieces were manufactured for export. Any way to determine the age/value of this set? There is no wear or chipping on any of the pieces.
: : Thanks.
:
: You should see the lithopane section of my site, or visit also dragonware.com.
: Lithopane have been produced from the '30 up to '50 with a peack time during WWII and japanese occupation mainly for local sale to US soldier.
: In fact you do not find easily lithopane in Europe or in Japan.
: The value is generally....low, but as you have a complete set in good condition, it is rather interesting and not so common. For some ideas of a price look at ebay.com, you get quite often lithopane.
: Thks for your message on the forum.
