Around 1830 Yoshidaya-gama was managed by Miyamoto Uemon which had great talent and
also was a good negotiator. Around 1831 Yoshidaya stopped making pottery at the death of
Toyota Denuemon the 5th .
In 1832, Toyota Denuemon the 6th, called also Senzo the 6th who had taken over died and
his brother Eiichiro who was Toyota Denuemon the 7th, came back to succeed in the
Yoshidaya business. But in 1834 Eiichiro had to sell his main business and also his sake
shop. In fact during all period of Yoshidaya there are always been problems of funds.
Finally Miyamoto Uemon took over the kiln in 1835. He hired a very good akae painter,
Iidaya Hachiroemon and sold its pottery under the name Hachirode.
At that time in Nomi Gun, there was also Ono kiln which was using akae painting and was
very famous at this time. We are thinking now that this akae paint was very fashionable at
this period.
Miyamoto kiln was going well, but in 1837, the son of Miyamoto Uemon, Rihachi died and in
1845 Miyamoto Uemon also died. Riuemon took over. On July 14, 1852 Iidaya Hachiroemon
died. The kiln became weaker, but a few years later, around 1854, (it is not clear when
exactly) as Riuemon management was not so good, Miyamoto kiln was closed.
A few years later it was absorbed by Hanbutsusansho of the Daishoji Lord. After this for a
short period the management changed several times and at last at the same place until now
continue to produce pottery.
Hachiroemon established a style called hoshibokufu.
When we compare Hachirode and Ono akae, it is very similar but the design of Hachirode is
may be more detailed. However it is difficult to distinguish but generally Hachirode
design is more artistic.
The Hachirode style was not made only by Hachiroemon, but by several persons. It is clear
that Hachiroemon had a position of leader and he made his employees very talented. If we
look at the pottery which have been made at that time, we can understand this very well.
Miyamoto kiln is called also Iidaya kiln or Hachiro because its main worker Iida
Hachirouemon was very famous. However the pottery from Miyamoto kiln are not only made in
red paint in Hachiro style. As a successor of Yoshidaya, Miyamoto had to continue the
style of Yoshidaya. We should recognize that green Kutani was the main style of Yoshidaya.
Therefore there are also a lot of green pottery, many are identified with a squared Fuku (•Ÿ),
some are marked with Kutani in a rectangle.
