POTTER'S SEALS and MARKING
Important note:
If you are looking for a specific mark, please go to the database, the marking shown here are just examples and the list is not updated.
Kutani ceramics are almost always identified at least with a Kutani mark - 九谷 -
However we can often find in addition either
the name of the kiln or the shop which has commercialized the production or
in rather rare case the name of the painter who did the actual work.
The seals and marking listed here have been identified as coming from a particular potter, painter, kiln or shop. The either generic marking or the one I could not identified are listed separately (unidentified marking).
One have to keep in mind that at end of Meiji several hundred of kilns and shops were producing ceramics in Ishikawa ken.
On the other hand famous kilns did not use all the times their own identification and just marked their production as "Kutani" or "Made in Kutani", then only an expert can identify the origin.
On the top part of the Menu, marking are gathered by categories in order to facilitate search. You may just browse through the different lists.
These lists are open to any comment and any information which could help me complete or correct them are welcome.
