Yabu Rokuemon 1790-1872
Yabu Rokuemon is born in 1790 in Ono village. He started to work very young
as a potter in Wakasugi kiln. There he learned from Honda Teikichi After the
death of Teikichi, he opened in 1819 a kiln in the village of Ono.
He made pottery first with clay from Hachiman which is near the village of Yawata
but he could not get good quality pottery.
In 1822, he received help from the Prefecture officials. In 1830 he discovered
"nabetani stone" at 4 km of the next village. He tried to improve the basic
pottery by using this stone. Slowly he reached a good quality. Due to the succes
of his kiln, Rokuemon collected good potters and painters such as Aoya Genuemon
from Ono, Saida Isaburo from Sano, Matsuya Kikusaburo from Komatsu and finally
Chosa from Terai.
From 1834 the kiln received the support from the district commissioner and this
helped the development of the kiln.
In 1841, Rokuemon retired from the management of Ono kiln and the Han took over
and Tsukano Sendaku was nominated by the Han in his place. Sendaku manufactured
lot of pottery for the usage of the Han.
