Nakamura Tsuneo 中村 恒 1903-1985

Nakamura Tsuneo (中村 恒) is born in 1903. He is the 2nd son of Kametaro (亀太郎) also called the 1st Shuto (初代中村 秋塘).

But when his brother, Nakamura 2nd, died in 1931, he came back from Kyoto to take care of the Shuto kiln and managed until his nephew be in age to establish himself. He became then Shuto 3rd.
Tsuneo learned from his father and also from Itaya Hazan (坂谷 波山).
He went to a pottery school first in Ishikawa Prefecture then moved to Kyoto ceramic research center.

In 1928 he was first selected at Nitten. In 1945, Nakamura Tsuneo (中村 恒) received the best prize at Nitten and is now a member of councilors. However as the son of his brother became older, in 1945 he gave up the title and used again his original name.

In 1953 he got also the best prize at Nitten and Asakura prize. In 1970 he received a prize from the Ministry of education.

In 1976, he became "Living cultural treasure" (Ningen mokubunkazai) in Ishikawa Prefecture and was recommended to be the chairman of the Living cultural treasure association.. Now he is chairman of Ishikawa Prefecture pottery Association

He wanted to make his original style adding to the traditional Kutani such as "some-tsuke", "suiban-fu", "ao-ji and "iroe" and he developed a new technic of writing and carving for enamel painting.

Nakamura Suiko was born as the second son of Nakamura Shuto the first in Daishoji town in 1903. He started his pottery career early as a student of Itaya Hazan. He added his novel touches to traditional Kutani porcelain and became the first chairman of the Society to Preserve Kutani Porcelain Technique.
