Suda Seika 1st {“c —^ŽO˜Y -1862-1927


Suda Yosaburo ({“c —^ŽO˜Y) is born in 1862 in Kanazawa. In 1880 he graduated from Ishikawa Kangyojo paint Department.

In 1880 he went to Kyoto and did research for 3 years on pottery technic. He also learned how to make tea.

In 1883, back from Kyoto, he started to work in Yamashiro at the Kutanihon Toki Kaisha (‹γ’J“©Šν‰οŽΠ). In 1884, Asukai Kiyoshi (”ς’Ήˆδ ΄), the President, died. Together with the pottery Manager, Hamasaka Seigoro (•l“c ΄Œά˜Y), he restarted Kutanihon Toki Kaisha (‹γ’J“©Šν‰οŽΠ). But the company did not make money and the business was not so good.

In 1891, he left Kutanihon and established himself as an independent painter. Later in 1906 he opened the Seika kiln (δΕ‰Ψ—q), he was very good at making some-tsuke, Shonzui (copy of Chinese Some-tsuke), Gosu-akae and copy of Ko-kutani. He had a hobby, he was found of tea ceremony and then specialized in making ceramic for green tea. He changed his name to Suda Seika 1st (‰‘㠐{“c δΕ‰Ψ).

In 1924 Kitaoji Rozanjin (–k‘ε˜H ˜DŽRl) came to Seika kiln. He was a famous potter and cooker. They produced together very fine tableware. Rozanjin wanted to produce pottery which could match his dishes.
Suda Seika died in 1927, he was 66 years old.
Today Seika kiln (δΕ‰Ψ—q) is still operated in Yamashiro by his grand-children.

During the Taisho period (1913/26) he produced fine tablewares for Kitaoji Rosanjin who was also a famous cooker.

He died in 1927 , he was 66 years old.

Today Seika kiln is still operated by his grand-children.

Suda Seika the First was born in Kanazawa in 1862. In 1880, he graduated from the Pottery Painting Department of Ishikawa Prefectural Research Institute of Industry. He went to Kyoto and learned pottery making. In 1883, he started working for a Kutani porcelain company in Yamashiro, Ishikawa. In 1885, he became a manager for the Pottery Painting Department of the company. In 1891, the company closed, forcing Seika to become independent. In 1906, he established the Seika Kiln. He was very talented at copying Old Kutani style, Sometsuke, Shonzui, Annan, Iga, Banreki and Old Akae style of porcelain. In 1915, Kitaoji Rosanjin, visited Seika kiln and from then on, they were associated with each other. Suda Seika the First passed away in 1927.
