Honda Teikichi 1766-1819
Honda Teikichi is born in 1766 in Hizen. When he was young he went to Kyoto
to learn pottery painting from Aoki Mokubei. He then returned to Arita where
he became a famous painter.
In 1808 Aoki Mukubei asked Honda Teikichi to help him in the starting of Kasugayama
kiln.They started the kiln and made mainly green pottery, sometsuke, colored
pictures and copies of Korean wares.
In 1812 Teikichi was invited by Hayashi Hachibei to open Wakasugi kiln. He discovered
a deposit of good porcelain clay and started to make wares in Imari style. Under
Teikichi leadership Wakasugi gama had quite a big production.
Unfortunatly on April 5, 1819, Honda died and the Wakasugi kiln closed down
temporarily.
