page 91

Nakamura Toyoji is born in 1885. He was quite rich and decided to start a ceramic kiln. He engaged potters from Kyoto and also from Nomi gun and in 1917 started a kiln in his home. He was doing mainly copy of Eiraku, Ninsei and also ceramic doll. His style was quite far from kutani rather Kyoto style (Kiyomizu). He had around 12 employees. He later took the name of Baizan and became quite famous although he was neither a painter nor a potter. He had enough money and did not care so much about financial result of his kiln.

He had several salesmen doing business with the hotels and hotsprings around Yamashiro area.

Nakamura Baizan (中村 梅山) did not do only traditional pottery but also explored many different fields. He was very active even at a very old age and had a lot of creativity.
